PAT Volunteer is awarded British Empire Medal

Steve and Nya on Look North

Stephen O'Callaghan, a PAT Volunteer who works at TransPennine Express, has been recognised for the tremendous work he does with PAT Dog Nya.

The Safeguarding and Crime Prevention Lead at TransPennine Express, Stephen has been awarded a British Empire Medal (BEM) in the 2026 King's Birthday Honours for his outstanding contribution to safeguarding, crime prevention and community safety across the rail industry.

He doesn't do this alone, though. At his side is his trusty four-legged companion, a German shepherd called Nya, who in 2025 helped make TransPennine Express the first train operating company in the UK to have a Pets As Therapy dog.

Together, Stephen and Nya visit stations across the rail network, supporting passengers and colleagues. They help to reduce anxiety, encourage positive interactions and create a safer, more welcoming environment.

Their work also supports safeguarding initiatives, with Nya often acting as an icebreaker that helps people feel comfortable starting conversations.

Building on their success, Stephen recently launched Nya the Train Dog: A Tale of Safety and Smiles, a children's book inspired by Nya's role on the railway.

The story promotes rail safety and safeguarding messages in an accessible way, while highlighting how therapy dogs can help children feel safer, build confidence and open up about their experiences.
