Volunteers' Week: Meet Lauren

Lauren Sun 7 June

It's the last day of Volunteers' Week, but our dedicated volunteers are out and about all year round - thank you! Today we're catching up with Lauren Cunningham from Glasgow, who visits a care home with her long-haired chihuahua Olive.

Lauren from Glasgow loves being a volunteer, and with Olive by her side, they make a terrific PAT Team.

“Nothing beats seeing faces light up," she smiles. "Seeing care home residents who are especially withdrawn come of their shells after meeting Olive is a great feeling. People who barely said a word to me when I first visited them, now love to talk about Olive. They want to know what she’s been up to.

"Olive had such an effect on one gentleman that she was featured in the pictures shown at his funeral - his family recognised the difference she made to his wellbeing. Olive's special relationship with him meant so much to his family."

Lauren decided to join PAT after meeting a volunteer at an event. "The person I spoke to convinced me that Olive was too good a wee dog to keep to myself. And they were right!"

She also says volunteering has greatly improved her confidence. "I have stood up in front of a classroom of children and done a talk on PAT. If you told me a few years ago I would manage such a thing, I'd have said you were crazy! I also feel volunteering has made me a more empathetic person. This skill helped me get into my current career so the skills you gain are invaluable.

"It will improve your wellbeing more than you can imagine. The pride you feel when showing off your best friend, and the joy you feel when someone’s face lights up are the best feelings.

'There are lots of opportunities being a volunteer. I have done so much in my two years with PAT and met so many wonderful people. Being a volunteer is exciting!”

The joy of volunteering

People are more likely to stick with volunteering if it feels fun and worthwhile - and that's why one of our PAT Values (shared principles that guide how we work together) is Joyful. We multiply joy wherever we go, from the gentle nudge of a nose to the laughter shared in a care home. We celebrate moments of happiness and always look for reasons to smile.

We rely on our volunteers to make visits on behalf of Pets As Therapy, but it's not only pet owners who support our charity - corporate partners are also a vital part of our PAT family.
