Maria & Betty Boo's story

Maria, a volunteer from Surrey, takes her dog Betty Boo to visit hospital ward patients
She may be only a little Jackahuawa (a cross being a Jack Russell and a chihuahua), but PAT Dog Betty Boo makes a big impact on everyone she meets.
"A young teenager at a hospital we visit was suffering from a severe mental health episode," recalls Maria. "But after holding and cuddling Betty Boo, she revealed it was the best day of her life."
Another patient, a lady receiving end of life care, also found comfort spending time with the PAT Pet. "She held Betty Boo and related her childhood experiences of being evacuated during the Second World War. It was extremely moving."

To the rescue
Maria rescued little Betty Boo from Battersea Dogs Home in 2016, and says she feels blessed to have the opportunity, with her dog, to bring comfort to those in need.
"Even if it's just a fleeting moment, it really is a special feeling. Volunteering is such a wonderful thing to do. I enjoy the interactions with many people from all walks of life."
Betty Boo is like a people magnet and works her magic on the wards.
Maria smiles and tells us Betty Boo springs into life when they're on PAT visits.
"She's like a people magnet and works her magic on the wards. The interaction breaks down barriers which enable patients to enjoy the moment in what may be a painful or difficult situation.
"Betty Boo is a natural people pleaser."
